Few places on Earth have experienced such turmoil as Angola. Four decades of war have ravaged the country's infrastructure. The fighting has orphaned thousands of children. Others have only their mothers left to look after them, and these widows struggle to feed their families. Many diseases are endemic. The spread of HIV/AIDS and recent Marburg outbreak have added to the misery of many Angolans. A disproportionate number of the country's 14 million citizens have migrated in recent years near Luanda and now live in the capital's impoverished outskirts.

Despite all these hardships, there is renewed hope for a better future in Angola. Three years of peace have finally taken hold, paving the way for the government to establish democratic, economic, social and educational reforms with the help of international organizations.
